Where the Bolt EV wins
The Bolt EV is one of two electric vehicles in this dataset, and its spec table works differently from every gas or hybrid car reviewed on this site: instead of a combined mpg figure, it carries a rating of 28.1 kWh per 100 miles. At $0.1834 per kilowatt-hour — the residential electricity price this site’s calculators use everywhere — that comes to about 5.2 cents a mile in energy cost, against 7.9 cents for a 52-mpg Prius and 10.2 cents for a 40-mpg RAV4 Hybrid. Add 1.8 cents a mile in maintenance, the lowest of any vehicle in this dataset, and 11.0 cents a mile in depreciation, and the total comes to roughly 18.0 cents a mile — the cheapest total running cost of any vehicle reviewed on this site, edging out even the Prius’s 20.4 cents by about 2.4 cents a mile.
Annual energy cost at a full-time driver’s 30,000-mile year, by this site’s working assumption, comes to about $1,546 — 8,430 kWh at $0.1834. Total running cost for the same year comes to about $5,386, the lowest of any vehicle reviewed on this site, and the current 76-cent IRS mileage rate clears that 4.23 times over — the widest margin in this dataset. The used-price range, $8,587 to $18,487, is also the second-lowest floor of any vehicle reviewed here, behind only the Kia Niro’s $8,093.
Where it does not
This car is rated for Uber X only — no Comfort, no XL — putting it in the same fare-tier bracket as the Prius, Corolla Hybrid, Sonata Hybrid, Niro, and RAV4 Hybrid, despite its running-cost advantage over all of them. Depreciation of 11.0 cents a mile makes up 61.3 percent of the 18.0-cent total, the second-highest depreciation share of any vehicle in this dataset behind only the Model 3’s 67.5 percent — and only barely ahead of the Corolla Hybrid’s 61.2 percent — a reminder that even the cheapest car to run per mile is still primarily a depreciation story, not a fuel or energy story.
Cargo space of 16.6 cubic feet is modest — better than the Corolla Hybrid’s 13.1 but well short of the Niro’s 22.4 or the RAV4 Hybrid’s 37.6 — and rear legroom of 36.0 inches sits in the middle of this dataset, ahead of the Prius’s 33.4 but behind the Civic’s 37.4 or the Accord Hybrid’s 40.4.
Charging time: the gap this dataset doesn’t fill
Every cost figure above assumes the Bolt EV’s 8,430 kWh a year simply appear in the battery at $0.1834 each, the way a tank of gas appears in a few minutes at a pump. That is not how charging works, and this dataset does not track how it works either: it has no field for charging speed, charger availability, or the minutes or hours a driver spends plugged in rather than earning fares. A driver weighing this car against a gas or hybrid car needs to add that time cost themselves, in whatever unit matters to their own schedule — and this site’s numbers cannot supply it, the same way the Prius review says plainly that fares and hours behind the wheel are numbers this dataset does not track. Naming that gap is more honest than filling it with a plausible-sounding minutes-per-charge figure this dataset has no source for.
Maintenance and the battery question
The published maintenance estimate is $273 a year, sourced to YourMechanic and the lowest of any vehicle in this dataset, built around a typical private driver’s mileage. Scaled to this site’s 1.8-cent-a-mile rate instead, a full-time 30,000-mile year comes to about $540 — roughly double the published figure, the same scaling pattern every vehicle in this dataset shows once mileage moves from a typical owner’s use to a full-time driver’s, though the Bolt EV’s low base rate keeps even the scaled figure well below every other car reviewed on this site.
The traction battery question gets the same honest treatment here as the hybrid battery question does everywhere else in this dataset: there is no separate line item for it. The 1.8-cent rate is YourMechanic’s average across whatever mix of ordinary and battery-related service its sample includes for this model. It is an average, not a warranty — a driver whose pack degrades or needs replacement outside that average pays well above 1.8 cents a mile in the year it happens, and no average in this dataset predicts which driver that will be.
Does it pay for itself?
At about $5,386 a year in energy, maintenance, and depreciation for 30,000 miles, whether the Bolt EV pays for itself depends on fares and hours behind the wheel — numbers this dataset does not track, and for this car specifically, on the charging-time cost described above, which this dataset also does not track. What the figures do supply is the running-cost half of the question: 18.0 cents a mile, or the kWh-per-100-miles figure with the maintenance and depreciation rates straight from the spec table, is what a payback-period calculation needs before a purchase price in the $8,587-$18,487 range turns into a concrete number of weeks.
The IRS mileage rate moved from 72.5 cents in the first half of 2026 to 76 cents on July 1 — a 3.5-cent step that changes nothing about what this car costs to run but adds about $1,050 to what a full 30,000-mile year is worth on a tax return compared with the earlier rate. On a car already running the lowest cost per mile in this dataset, that deduction covers the widest multiple of real cost of any vehicle reviewed here.
Verdict
The Bolt EV is a strong pick for a driver working Uber X exclusively, buying toward the bottom of the $8,587-$18,487 range, and prioritizing the lowest running cost in this dataset over cargo room or a Comfort upgrade path — as long as that driver can absorb charging time into their schedule in a way this dataset cannot quantify. It is a weak pick for a driver who needs Comfort or XL access, since Uber’s own listing caps this car at X, or who needs real cargo space, since 16.6 cubic feet trails the Niro and RAV4 Hybrid by a wide margin. A direct comparison against the Prius, the closest gas-or-hybrid rival on running cost, is the natural next read for a driver weighing the Bolt EV’s cost advantage against the charging-time question this review can only name, not measure.
